Members may attend as often as they wish. Fencers are expected to attend practice at least twice a week if possible. Individual lessons in foil, epee, and saber, and open fencing are offered each session except Fridays, which is Foil only. Fencers enrolled in a particular class are expected to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to class start time.

Benefits of Fencing

A recent poll stated that the number 1 benefit of being a fencer for college bound students is that it offers a strong advantage when applying to schools.

Fencing is good exercise both for the body and the mind. It is very challenging as well as fun. It offers stress relief, promotes flexibility, and better balance. Many fencers credit fencing with aiding them in their longevity. Fencing offers insights into such topics as psychology and strategy. Some colleges offer scholarships for fencing. The social rewards should not be overlooked. Club members often become friends and competitors find themselves meeting hundreds of people over the years as they travel to competitions locally, nationally, and internationally. Fencing offers an excuse to travel both domestically and abroad. Very skilled fencers may have the opportunity to compete in prestigious tournaments including the Olympic Games. (Fencers are not required to compete but it does add an important layer to the experience.) Fencing can also offer a feeling of connection to such heroes as Zorro and the Three Musketeers and be helpful for those interested in theatrical swordplay.
