Fencers will be expected to bring their own food. Water will be available but fencers must bring refillable water bottles. Students need to bring a t-shirt or two each day and sweat pants (or better yet fencing knickers). Boys will need to wear a protective cup. PVFA will provide the rest of the necessary fencing equipment for those who need to borrow equipment. Youth Clinic: Cost: $375, or $325 with early registration and payment prior to June 1st. No experience is required but we request that any new students come to PVFA and take one lesson first just to see if fencing is a good fit for the student before committing to a whole week. Suggested ages 10-12. These classes make a great introduction to fencing and are also very good for current fencers looking to improve their skills or try all three weapons. Equipment is available at the club to use, but we suggest students use their own equipment if possible. The focus for newer fencers will be on learning fundamental skills. Experienced fencers will be working on improving technical skills. There will be warm-up exercises, games, footwork practice, and drills, and bouting.
Cancelled 2024 Intro and Intermediate Clinic: Cost: $375, or $325 with early registration and payment prior to June 1st. Suggested ages 13+. No experience is required for Intro Clinics but we request that any new students come to PVFA and take one lesson first just to see if fencing is a good fit for the student before committing to a whole week. These classes make a great introduction to fencing and are also very good for current fencers looking to improve their skills or try all three weapons. We've taught these classes for several years now and can say from experience that they are a lot of fun. Equipment is available at the club to use, but we suggest students use their own equipment if possible. The focus for newer fencers will be on learning fundamental skills as well as physical conditioning. Experienced fencers will be working on improving technical skills and gaining tactical awareness. Mornings will focus on warm-up exercises, games, footwork practice, and drills. Afternoon sessions will begin with warm-ups, then move to technical and tactical group lessons, and bouting.
Competitive Clinic: Cost: $375, or $325 with early registration and payment prior to June 1st. Suggested age 13+. At least six months of experience is suggested. (No complete beginners please). This is a much more demanding clinic that focuses more on tactics, training bouts, and a deeper understanding of fencing theory. Each day includes a lecture. Lecture topics include sports psychology, goal setting, terminology, the history of fencing, etc. Each student must write a one to two page self evaluation paper due on Friday morning. All of our top fencers, those who earned national medals, earned A ratings, college fencing scholarships, and coaching certifications have credited these clinics for the success. Attending this clinic each summer is a must for our most dedicated fencers, yet it is still fun and is recommended for our more casual fencers who just want to have fun with their friends too.
What fencers have said about the PVFA Competitive clinics:
“I was able to push myself and somehow draw upon energy when it seemed as though I had none...I made a mental and psychological leap.” --Mariam I.
“After surviving (if somewhat narrowly) all that this week has thrown at me so far, I'm feeling just a tad more fearless and confident than I was at the beginning.” Rachel M.
“Although speed training and weight work helped me a great deal physically, training bouts and deliberate play were what really changed the picture for me. The training bouts helped open my eyes to something I had not understood before about fencing.” Alex D.
Winter Clinic-Four days between Christmas and New Years. $180. Winter Session differs from the summer clinics in that it is during the afternoons from 1 pm till 6 pm. Fencers may attend at $60 per day if unable to commit to the full 4 day clinic. Kids and adults welcomed! Beginners welcomed! Foil, epee, and saber fencing are all practiced during this clinic.
